Mitchell junior Legion team wins two, drops one

SIOUX FALLS -- The Mitchell junior Legion baseball team went 2-1 at the Sioux Falls Wooden Bat Classic over the weekend.

In Friday's game against Omaha South, Mitchell won 10-2 in five innings.

Tyler Houwman got the win on the mound, pitching three innings and striking out four. He didn't give up any runs or hits.

Landon Neugebauer was 2-for-3 with a triple and three RBIs.

Mitchell played two games on Saturday, winning the first and falling in the second. Mitchell beat Brandon Valley 7-0 in the opening game.

Andrew Neugebauer got the win on the mound, giving up two hits while striking out three in six innings.

Houwman was 2-for-3 with three RBIs.

Sioux Falls West shut out Mitchell 10-0 in the second game Saturday.

Mitchell Price took the loss, giving up seven runs with three earned in two innings. Sioux Falls West's pitcher threw a perfect game.

Mitchell (10-11) plays Sioux Falls West Tuesday in a doubleheader. The first game begins at 5 p.m. in Sioux Falls.

Mitchell Black goes 2-2 over weekend

Mitchell Black earned a pair of close teener baseball wins against Pierre on Saturday before dropping two games to the Rapid City Kings Sunday.

Mitchell beat Pierre 4-3 in 10 innings and then rallied late for an 11-10 win in the second game. Sunday, Mitchell fell 7-1 and 15-2 to Rapid City.

In the 4-3 win over Pierre, the game went three extra innings, and saw Mitchell get strong pitching performances from Ryland DeVries and Baley Miller. DeVries pitched the first seven innings, allowing six hits and three runs while striking out five. Miller earned the win with three shutout innings, allowing two hits while striking out one.

Mitchell got two hits each from Spencer Neugebauer, Bryce Geraets and Matt Muth. Neugebauer had a triple and scored the winning run on a hit by Geraets in the 10th. In the seventh inning, Muth got a hit and later scored on a Parker Wenzel hit to tie the game.

In the second game, Pierre jumped to a 10-2 lead, but Mitchell rallied late behind a balanced offense and the pitching of reliever Elijah Pommer, who pitched the final three innings. He allowed one hit and struck out three to earn the win.

Pommer had two hits, as did Geraets. Wenzel was the starting pitcher, followed by Briggs Havlik, Geraets and Pommer.

In Sunday's 7-1 loss to Rapid City, Spencer Neugebauer pitched the complete game for Mitchell, allowing 10 hits and three earned runs. Offensively, Neugebauer had two singles and Wenzel had a double and single.

In the 15-2 loss, Wenzel was the starting pitcher, allowing six hits and two earned runs in three innings. Havlik relieved.

Mitchell is 11-9 and plays Sioux Falls West Tuesday.

Area athletes win at state Hershey track meet

BELLE FOURCHE -- Three area athletes won an event at the South Dakota State Hershey Track Meet Saturday at Lou Graslie Stadium in Belle Fourche.

Bella Swedlund, of Winner, won the softball throw in the 9- and 10-year-old girls' division. She recorded a throw of 112 feet, 6 inches.

On the boys' side, Drayton Priebe won the 200-meter dash in the 9-10 division with a time of 31.6 seconds. He also took second in the 100-meter dash for the 9-10 division. He ran a time of 15.26.

Jayd VanDerWerff, of Gregory, was crowned champion of the softball throw for the 13-14 division. He recorded a throw of 245-2.
