Guardianship Program holding golf fundraiser

The Guardianship Program is holding its annual Golf for Guardianship fundraiser.

It is selling golf cards that can be used at 90 courses across South Dakota, including Wild Oak Golf Club, Lakeview Golf Course in Mitchell, Parkston Country Club and Lakeview Golf Course in Corsica.

One card is $30 or a Gold Pak, which is four cards, for $100.

With the purchase of a card, golfers can play a 9-hole round for free or at some courses can golf 18 holes at 50 percent reduced green fees. Some golf courses can place limits on days of use and also require golf cart rental.

Last year, the program raised more than $10,000 for guardianship services to adults in South Dakota with disabilities.

DWU adds two to volleyball roster

Dakota Wesleyan University volleyball coach Eric Viney announced the addition of the final two incoming players for next season's roster, it was announced this week.

Marissa Soderberg, of Roundup, Mont., and Rebecca Garcia, who is a transfer from Rio Hondo College in Whittier, Calif., bring the recruiting class to eight signees.

Soderberg is an outside hitter and had a season-high 24 kills in a game in her senior season. Garcia is a setter and has two years of eligibility remaining.

Authier, Drake recipients of SDHSAA award

The South Dakota High School Activities Association has selected 20 individuals for as Distinguished Service Award recipients, it was announced Thursday.

Lyman's Tom Authier and Winner's Jim Drake will receive the award in the category of coaches and directors. The award is the highest recognition bestowed by the association and is designed to honor individuals who have made significant contributions to athletic and fine arts activities in the state.

All awards will be presented throughout the 2013-14 school year at various SDHSAA state athletic and fine arts events.

SDSU vs. Nebraska tickets on sale Monday

A limited number of tickets for the South Dakota State vs. Nebraska football game go on sale at the Jackrabbit ticket office at 9 a.m. Monday in Brookings.

Tickets may be purchased online at, or calling 1-866-gojacks or at the ticket office, which is on the first floor of Frost Arena. Tickets are $60 each plus a $5 order fee. Each person is limited to four tickets and tickets will be mailed out in August.

The game is scheduled for Sept. 21 in Lincoln, Neb.

Schmidt helps Mitchell Black in shutout victory

WINNER-- Jed Schmidt struck out all nine batters he faced and had a single and triple to pace Mitchell Black to a 10-0 teener baseball win over Winner Thursday.

The win came after a 12-4 Mitchell win in the opener.

Other offensive leaders for Mitchell were Elijah Pommer and Sam Michels, who each had a pair of hits. Pommer doubled.

Ryland DeVries pitched the final two innings, allowing one hit while striking out three.

In the first game, Mitchell got two hits apiece from Sam Michels, Spencer Neugebauer, Cody Reichelt and Kyle Woodall. Woodall's hits included a two-RBI triple and Neugebauer had a double.

Michels was the winning pitcher, allowing two hits and four runs in three innings while striking out four. Bailey Miller threw the final three innings, striking out four and allowing no hits.

Mitchell is 9-7 and travels to Pierre Saturday.
