Fink quits DWU basketball team

Freshman Adam Fink no longer plays for the Dakota Wesleyan University men's basketball team, head coach Shane Murphy confirmed Monday.

The Armour native played on the junior varsity team this past season and said he is pursuing other interests.

When asked if he'll play elsewhere, Fink, who was a three-time Class B all-state selection, declined to comment. He is still enrolled at DWU, but will be done after this semester, he said.

Madut finishes Boston Marathon before explosions

BOSTON -- Former Dakota Wesleyan University cross country and track and field runner finished the 117th Boston Marathon before explosions erupted around the finish line Monday.

Thomas Madut placed 73rd overall with a time of 2 hours, 29 minutes and finished 66th in the men's race and 53rd in his division.

Madut was the highest-finishing South Dakotan as there were 19 from the state participating in the race.

Last year, he finished in 46th place with a time of 2:35.18.

Herll takes 5th on vault at regionals

ST. LOUIS -- Mitchell's Quinci Herll placed fifth on vault at the Region 4 Level 8 Super Team Senior Meet Saturday in St. Louis.

The Mitchell freshman scored a 9.375 on vault -- her highest score of the meet. Herll scored an 8.675 on uneven bars, 8.2 on balance beam and 9.0 on the floor exercise.

She placed 23rd in the all-around with a total of 35.25.

"I was really proud at how she competed at a big meet with fantastic kids around her," MEGA coach Audra Rew said. "She did the best routines I've seen her do."

Herll had the highest place out of all of the Level 8 gymnasts from South Dakota.

Pfeifer to speak at Quarterback Club Wednesday

Division I basketball official Kelly Pfeifer will speak at the Quarterback Club Wednesday night at The Depot.

South Dakota High School Activities Association Executive Director Wayne Carney is scheduled to talk April 24.

DWU baseball team drops pair to Midland

FREMONT, Neb. -- The Dakota Wesleyan University baseball team was swept by Great Plains Athletic Conference Midland University in a doubleheader Monday.

The Tigers (19-16, 6-4 GPAC) were defeated 4-3 and 3-2.

In the opening game, Midland jumped out to 2-0, scoring both runs in the first inning. DWU cut the lead to 2-1 in the second as Tyler Waddle scored Eric Nockleby on a sacrifice fly.

The Tigers came within one twice more in the fifth and seventh innings but were unable to tie or take the lead. Cole Wenande and Cody Silveria each went 2-for-3 from behind the plate and Nick Tadlock had two RBIs.

In the second game, the Tigers had a 2-0 lead going into the bottom of the sixth inning after a Tim Cusick RBI single in the first and Waddle RBI single in the fifth.

Midland scored three unanswered runs in the final two innings to sweep DWU. Silveria went 2-for-3 for DWU, which totaled 11 hits in the two games.
