Kernels to play at Huron in first round of postseason

YANKTON -- Although the Kernel boys suffered a 50-42 loss to Yankton in their final game of the regular season, Mitchell maintained the third seed in District 3AA.

Mitchell will play No. 2-seeded Huron in the first round of district play Tuesday in Huron, while No. 1-seeded Pierre (15-5) hosts No. 4-seeded Aberdeen Central Tuesday in Pierre.

Aberdeen Central (5-13) was in a must-win situation to surpass the Kernels (5-15) for district seeding and was defeated by Pierre 61-48 Tuesday night in Aberdeen.

Although the teams have the same amount of power points, the Kernels win the tie-breaker, giving them the third seed. Mitchell has more wins against common opponents than the Golden Eagles for the upper hand.

The Kernels have lost both contests to Huron (14-6) this season, losing by 22 in the first contest and two in Saturday's matchup at the Corn Palace.

Mitchell head coach Tom Young said having played the Tigers recently will be an advantage.

"Both teams know each other very well," he said. "On Saturday, we proved we could play with them. And if our kids step up their play, I think we're ready to perform well in districts."

The Kernels, who were originally scheduled to play Tuesday night's game against Yankton Thursday, now have more than a week to prepare for the postseason.

"This week in practice is really big," Young said. "It's going to come down to how bad our kids want it, and I'm going to challenge them."
