Mitchell splits games on first day of PeeWee state tourney

The Mitchell Marlins PeeWee A team split a pair of state tournament games Friday at the Mitchell Activities Center.

Mitchell opened the day with an 8-2 win over Sioux Center, Iowa, but lost to Rushmore 7-3 in the next round.

In the first game, Tucker Hohn, Drew Kitchens and Jake Jarman each had two goals. Kitchens and Jarman each added an assist.

Austin Kerr had a goal, Alex Bergeson had one goal and an assist and Jeremiah Schmitz and Adam Loes both had an assist.

The game was tied at 1 after one period, but the Marlins scored three second-period goals and four third-period goals.

Goalie Ben Colwell had 23 saves in the victory.

In the second game, Hohn had two unassisted goals and Bergeson had an unassisted goal.

Mitchell, which scored once each period, trailed 3-1 after the first period. Colwell had 23 saves.

The Marlins are back in action at noon today at the Mitchell Activities Center, where the entire PeeWee A state tournament is being held.

Mitchell plays Sioux Falls West in a game that will determine one of the teams to play for fifth-sixth place. The loser of Mitchell-West will play for seventh and eighth place.
