Area high school basketball roundup 02/05/13: Mount Vernon/Plankinton tops Parkston

PARKTON -- Mount Vernon/Plankinton had three players score 20 or more points in a 74-62 win over Parkston Friday in boys' high school basketball action.

Jared Long had 24 points, Deric Denning finished with 23 points and Kellam Karst had 20 points for the Titans.

MVP was 26-of-49 from the field, 14-of-19 from the free-throw line and had 13 turnovers.

Parkston's Spencer Lucas had 29 points and Kyle Hohn and Jake DeLange each had nine points.

The Trojans were 24-of-59 from the field, 11-of-17 from the free-throw line and had 11 turnovers.

Parkston won the JV game.

Mount Vernon/Plankinton is 12-6 and plays McCook Central/Montrose Monday in Salem, while Parkston (10-9) plays at Parker Monday.

Bon Homme 56, Gregory 45

TYNDALL -- Scott Van Winkle had 21 points to lead Bon Homme past Gregory 56-45 Friday.

Bon Homme's Mike Mesman had 14 points and Hunter Young finished with 10 points. Kodi Larson had a team-best six rebounds.

Bon Homme was 18-of-36 from the field, 15-of-19 from the foul line and had 15 turnovers.

Gregory's Sean Kafka had 11 points and Andrew Taggert had three assists.

The Gorillas were 19-of-49 from the field, 3-of-4 from the free-throw line and had 20 turnovers.

Bon Homme (6-14) also won the JV game and plays Platte-Geddes in the District 10A Feb. 26. Gregory (5-13) hosts Platte-Geddes Monday.

ARMOUR -- Ethan had four players in double figures in a 61-40 win over Tripp-Delmont/Armour Friday.

Blake Bartscher had 17 points, Colton Bierle had 11 points and Jace Connor and Anthony Huber each had 10 points. Connor also had 10 of the team's 28 rebounds.

Ethan, which won the JV game, was 26-of-49 from the field, 5-of-7 from the foul line and had eight turnovers.

TDA was led Austin Barlow, who had 15 points and five rebounds. Shane Koster finished with 11 points.

The Nighthawks were 17-of-43 from the field, 3-of-6 from the foul line and had 18 team rebounds.

Ethan (10-7) plays Freeman Monday at the Corn Palace in Mitchell, while TDA (7-11) plays Kimball/White Lake Monday in Kimball.

MCLAUGHLIN -- Chamberlain's Gage Basting had a team-best 19 points in an 80-34 win over McLaughlin Friday.

Chamberlain's Skyler Bertram had 15 points, Davis Carson had 11 points and Reuben Estes had 10 points. Dalton Andera finished with 10 rebounds.

Chamberlain (13-5) plays at Lyman Monday in Presho. Chamberlain led 30-15 at halftime.

WESSINGTON SPRINGS -- Wessington Springs led No. 2-ranked James Valley Christian 83-43 after the first quarter,

Wessington Springs Braden Jones had 15 points. Trenity Kenobbie added eight points. Austin Messmer finished with a team-high eight rebounds.

In the loss, the Spartans were 19-of-45 from the field, 4-of-6 from the free-throw line and had 28 rebounds.

James Valley Christian Adam Hofer, who had 22 points. JVC finished with 31 rebounds. JVC also won the JV game.

Wessington Springs (4-15) plays Mitchell Christian Monday in Mitchell, while JVC (18-1) plays Wolsey-Wessington Monday.

Canistota 77, Centerville 63

CANISTOTA -- Canistota got a couple of standout performances from Alex Robertson and Jason Van Winkle to beat Centerville 77-63 in a boys' basketball game Friday in Canistota.

Robertson scored 34 points and dished out seven assists and Jason Van Winkle recorded a double-double with 19 points and 22 rebounds.

Cody Bunger added 13 points for the Hawks, who were 27-of-50 from the field and grabbed 45 rebounds.

Four Centerville players scored in double figures. Logan Hunter led the way with 17 points, Seamus O'Malley added 13, Josh DeRaab had 12 and Ty Knutson finished with 11.

Luke Abbas grabbed 11 rebounds for Centerville, which was 18-of-62 from the field.

Canistota also won the JV game 55-44.

Canistota (18-1) hosts Coleman-Egan Monday in Canistota. Centerville (14-4) plays Beresford today in Beresford.

WINNER -- Ben Connot scored 30 points to help lead Winner past Mobridge-Pollock 70-55 in a boys' basketball game Friday.

Nathan Galbrath added 11 points, Tanner Fritz had 10 and Isaiah Old Lodge finished with eight rebounds.

Winner (10-8) was 20-of-44 from the field and had 35 rebounds.

Mobridge-Pollock was led by Daniel Roberts who finished with 21 points and eight rebounds.

Mitchell Heumiler chipped in with 12 for Mobridge-Pollock, which is now 15-4.

Winner also won the junior varsity game 60-44.

Winner plays Miller Monday in Miller.

Menno 33, Scotland 32

MENNO -- The Menno boys' basketball team beat Scotland 33-32 Friday to earn its seventh win of the season.

Dylan Lehr and Caleb Preszler led Menno in scoring. Lehr finished with nine points and Preszler had eight.

The Wolves were 10-of-44 from the field and grabbed 24 rebounds.

Scotland was led by Seth Ireland, who scored 10 points. The Highlanders shot 13-of-35 from the field and committed 17 turnovers.

The junior varsity game was also a one-point difference. Scotland won 24-23.

Menno (7-12) plays Andes Central Monday in Lake Andes. Scotland (2-17) takes on Hanson Monday in Alexandria.

Freeman 67, Avon 35

FREEMAN -- Three Freeman boys' basketball players scored in double figures to help Freeman beat Avon 67-35 Friday.

Cole Paulsen led the way with 18 points, Shaun Beaker added 16 and Jordan Rinehert had 10.

The Flyers were 25-of-41 from the field and 14-of-23 from the free-throw line.

Brennan Schmidt and Cole Paulsen combined for nine of Freeman's 21 rebounds.

Avon was led by Logan Mudder, who scored 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds.

Taylor Hento finished with 10 points and was the only other Pirates player to score in double figures.

Avon was 14-of-40 from the field and committed 25 turnovers.

Freeman (12-7) plays Ethan 8 p.m. Monday at the Corn Palace in Mitchell. Avon (6-13) takes on South Central Thursday in Burke.

PRESHO -- Jaylen and Jaelani Uthe helped lead the Lyman Raiders past Kadoka 65-19 in a boys' basketball game Friday.

Jaylen scored a team-high 12 points, while Jaelani added 11.

Erica Terca doled out five assists and the Lyman was 4-of-19 from the free-throw line and the Raiders out rebounded Kadoka 35-26.

Kadoka was led by True Bucholz who scored seven points.

Lyman (8-10) plays Chamberlain Monday in Presho. Kadoka (1-16) takes on Phillip Friday in Phillip.

Platte-Geddes 61, Wagner 50

PLATTE -- Koby Johnson recorded a double-double to help Platte-Geddes beat Wagner 61-50 Friday in a boys' basketball game.

Johnson scored 21 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for the Black Panthers, who are now 12-7. Tate Van Zee added 16 points and Hunter Johnson had eight rebounds. Platte-Geddes was 23-of-53 from the field and 13-of-19 from the free-throw line.

Wagner was led by Noah St. Pierre, who finished with 17 points and five rebounds. Will Hollman had eight points and six rebounds.

Wagner made 19 of its 48 field goals and five of its 10 free throws. Platte-Geddes plays its final game of the regular season Monday in Gregory. Wagner (8-10) takes on Marty Monday in Marty.

Girls' basketball

Chamberlain 77, McLaughlin 45

MCLAUGHLIN -- Chamberlain's Kennedy Wagner had 19 points and nine rebounds in a 77-45 win over McLaughlin Friday.

Jaymee Knippling had 15 points and 12 rebounds, Corrina Reuer finished with 12 points and Alex Pederson added 11 points for the Cubs. Logan Pickner added eight rebounds.

Chamberlain, which won the JV game, was 27-of-62 from the field, 15-of-24 from the foul line and had 20 turnovers.

McLaughlin's Bobbi Jamerson had 11 points and Shayla Gayeon also added 11 points.

Chamberlain (19-1) plays in the District 12A championship game Thursday in a site yet to be determined.

WINNER -- The Winner girls' basketball team beat Mobridge-Pollock 59-19 to earn its 13th win of the season.

Kelsey Bertram scored 16 points to lead Winner in scoring. Cassidy Hanson added 10 points and Sara Huscher had eight.

Winner outrebounded Mobridge-Pollock 29-14 and made 29 of its 53 shot attempts.

Kaitlin Goodshield led Mobridge-Pollock in scoring with six points.

Winner (13-6) plays St. Francis Saturday in St. Francis.

Bon Homme 70, Gregory 18

TYNDALL -- The Bon Homme girls' basketball team forced 31 turnovers en route to defeating Gregory 70-18 Friday.

Karley Kozak and Jody Kriz led the Cavaliers in scoring. Kozak scored 11 and Kriz had 10.

Bon Homme shot 33-of-77 from the field, grabbed 39 rebounds and had five turnovers.

Gregory was led by Megan Preslicka, who scored eight points.

The Gorillas were 4-of-27 from the field and 1-of-4 from the free-throw line.

Bon Homme (8-12) takes on Wagner Tuesday in Wagner. Gregory (1-18) plays Todd County next in the District 13.
