Marlin girls beat Cougars 3-2 in OT

Haley Stahl scored a goal in overtime to lift the Mitchell Marlin girls' varsity hockey team over Aberdeen 3-2 Saturday.

The Cougars earned a 2-0 lead after two periods.

The Marlins tied the game in the third period with two goals. Stahl scored the first goal with an assist by Kylie Barington just 13 seconds into the period. Barington tied the game at 2 with a goal with the assist by Stahl on a power play.

Stahl scored the overtime goal with an assist by Bailey Hohn on a power play to improve Mitchell's record to 7-10-3.

Aberdeen outshot the Marlins 26-21 and Mitchell goalie Hannah Spates made 24 saves in the win.

Mitchell Marlin boys fall to Aberdeen Cougars 6-4

ABERDEEN -- The Aberdeen Cougars defeated the Mitchell Marlin boys' varsity hockey team 6-4 Saturday in Aberdeen.

The Cougars (2-13) went up 1-0 with the only goal in the opening period. Aberdeen kept its lead, outscoring Mitchell 4-2 in the second.

The Marlins' second-period goals came from Alex Murtha and Jacob Cersosimo with assists from Cersosimo and Kaleb Niehoff.

Mitchell (2-15) outscored its opponent in the third but couldn't complete the comeback. Ben Hogan and Alex Thill scored goals in the final period with Jordan Grosdidier recording an assist.

Aberdeen outshot the Marlins 35-31 in the game. Both Mitchell Weston Gauger and Tate Sutherland shared time in the goal.

Gauger made 11 saves on 13 shots on goal, while Sutherland saved 27 of 31 shots on goal.

The Marlins play the Sioux Falls Flyers Saturday in Sioux Falls.

Oakland defeats SDSU men 88-83

ROCHESTER, Mich. (AP) -- Travis Bader scored 31 points, making 9 of 16 from 3-point range, and Oakland won its fifth game in a row by defeating South Dakota State 88-83 on Saturday.

The game was a matchup of the two players with the highest point totals in a game this season. Nate Wolters of South Dakota State, who had 53 points on Thursday night at IPFW, scored 36 against Oakland on Saturday but it wasn't enough as the Jackrabbits' eight-game winning streak ended.

Oakland (13-13, 8-4) knocked South Dakota State (19-7, 10-3) out of a first-place tie with idle Western Illinois in the Summit League.

Wolters' performance Thursday surpassed Bader's 47-point effort against IUPUI on Jan. 24, when Bader had a school-record 11 3-pointers.

SDSU women rout Oakland 83-48

BROOKINGS -- Ashley Eide had 17 points, Megan Waytashek had 16 points and Hannah Strop had 10 rebounds to lift South Dakota State University over Oakland 83-48 Saturday in Summit League women's basketball action.

SDSU was 32-of-73 from the field and hit nine of 26 three-point shots. SDSU won the rebounding battle 49-32 and moved to 19-6 overall on the season and 11-1 in the Summit League.

USD women blow out Kansas City

VERMILLION -- Tempestt Wilson scored a game-high 18 points for the University of South Dakota in a 67-45 win over Kansas City in Summit League women's basketball action.

Margaret McCloud and Heidi Hoff each had off the bench and scored 13 and 11 points. Lisa Loegger had 10 points for the Coyotes, who are 12-12 overall and 7-4 in the Summit League.

UMKC men tops Coyotes 80-65

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Fred Chatmon scored a career-high-tying 20 points off the bench, Nate Rogers added 17 and UMKC snapped its five-game losing streak with an 80-65 win over South Dakota on Saturday.

Chatmon was 7 of 8 from the field and added seven rebounds for the Kangaroos (7-19, 4-8 Summit League).

Trevor Gruis had 17 points for the Coyotes (8-16, 4-8), who have lost four in a row.

18 participate in meet for Tigers

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa -- The Dakota Wesleyan University track and field programs had 18 athletes participate in the Dordt Indoor Invitational Saturday in Sioux Center, Iowa.

Jessie Pederson took 13th and Lindsey Sanftner was 15th in the women's long jump. Pederson took 11th in the triple jump with a jump of 33-03.25 feet and Sanftner jumped 32-01 for 15th place. Abby Fossum was 17th in the triple jump with a distance of 31-09.50.

Daniel Porter took 18th in the men's long jump and 10th in the triple jump.

Ryan Antaya and Michael Stier placed 18th and 19th in the men's weight throw. Stier placed 23rd in the shot put with a throw of 37-6.05.

Jamie Geho took 13th in the women's 3,000-meter run with a time of 12 minutes and 19.07 seconds.

Andres Hernandez placed 13th with a time of 2:02.09 in the men's 800-meter run.

Dalton Smith was ninth in the men's 400-meter dash with a time of 52.25. Smith was seventh in the 200-meter dash in 23.31.

Alexis Moore and Paul Apenhorst took 31st and 35th in the men's 200-meter dash.

Tamika Irvin took second place in the women's 200 meter dash with a time of 25.39. She finished in second place in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.39.

MaKenzie Hageman finished seventh in 26.96 in the 200-meter dash. Hageman finished in third in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.46.

Trace Tjeerdsma ran the men's one-mile run in 4:47.53 to finish in 14th, while Michael Claar finished in 21st in 5:09.9.

Skylar Forgey was 13th in the women's 800-meter run in 2:31.91 and Kayleen Gupman took 20th with a time of 2:44.48.

Heather Banister finished in 13th in the women's 1,000-meter run in 3:45.70.
