Notebook: Sadler back for Mitchell gymnastics team at Brookings Invite

The Kernel gymnastics team is coming off the holiday break with some good news.

Sophomore Rebecca Sadler, the team's top all-around athlete last season, will return to competition at the Brookings Invite Saturday. The meet begins at noon at Brookings High School.

Sadler was out of the lineups for the first half of the season with a foot injury but returned to practice a week ago.

"It's nice getting her back, and it's really added a positive to the team," Mitchell head coach Audra Rew said.

Sadler is only competing uneven bars in the meet but has been practicing balance beam, as well. Rew said she'll take Sadler's comeback day-by-day.

"She's not completely where she wants to be," said Rew, adding that this is Sadler's first injury in the sport. "She is doing a lot better than she thinks, and I think after she competes Saturday, she'll realize how much she's really helping us."

Gymnasts adding new skills for second half of season

Not only did the Kernels add a competitor for the new year, but the gymnasts improved their skill levels.

"Just about everybody on varsity is ready to compete a new skill," Rew said. "Getting these new skills added a lot of excitement in the gym over the break."

New skills have been added to routines on all four events.

Rew said a few gymnasts competed new skills before the break but fell on them.

"We were able to put in a lot of numbers for these new skills, and now they are consistent," she said. "I'm confident with the new skills our girls are putting into their routines."

The Kernels will continue to work to improve difficulty as the season progresses, Rew added.

Wittstruck, Johnston to be honored at senior meet

Seniors Nicole Wittstruck and Nakkia Johnston will be honored at Monday's meet against Sioux Falls Roosevelt and Wagner.

The meet begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Mitchell High School gymnasium. The seniors will be honored after the meet.

Wittstruck has been a part of the Kernels since she was in seventh grade, while Johnston rejoined the team for her senior season.
