Doom leads Wagner to fifth place, named to Class A state volleyball all-tournament team

WAGNER -- On a team of standout players, Jessa Doom played on a different level during the Class A state volleyball tournament.

Doom was the only Wagner player to be named to the Class A all-tournament team. She has made the all-tournament team for three straight years.

"(Doom) is very deserving of the honor and is an all-around good player," Wagner head coach Amy Tyler said. "She not only excels at her position but has improved elsewhere."

During all three state tournament matches, Doom recorded a total of 100 set assists, earning 49 of those against Aberdeen Roncalli Saturday.

For her efforts, Doom has been named The Daily Republic's athlete of the week, an award voted on by the newspaper's sports staff.

Not only did Doom, a setter, record 49 set assists during the match for fifth place, she contributed to all aspects of the game statistically. She had 14 digs, nine kills, two aces and one block.

Tyler said Doom stepped up when the Red Raiders were struggling.

"At one point at state, we were having a hard time getting the ball down, and Jessa turned into an offensive player, making our first four or five kills," Tyler said. "Defensively, she had some great blocks when we needed them. She was all over the floor and did a great job."

Doom, a junior, led the team with 906 set assists and 85 service aces this year.

"She's been tremendous all season and is a good motivator on the floor." Tyler said.
