WEDNESDAY'S BRIEFS: Northern State University upsets Butler in exhibition men's basketball game

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The Northern State men's basketball team got a game-winning three-pointer from senior Alex Thomas as time expired to upset NCAA Division I power Butler in exhibition play Wednesday night at Hinkle Fieldhouse.

Butler is coming off back-to-back trips to the NCAA championship game. The Bulldogs returned eight players from last year's runner-up squad and were ranked 31st in The Associated Press and the ESPN/USA Today preseason national polls.

NSU's Collin Pryor turned went 9-for-12 from the field to finish with 18 points.  He also had seven rebounds.

The Wolves begin regular season action at home on Nov. 15, hosting Jamestown College in the first of four nonconference home games.  Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. in Wachs Arena.

Kitto rolls 300 at Village Bowl

Brandon Kitto rolled a 300 game Tuesday night at the Village Bowl in Mitchell.

Kitto, a 21-year-old Mitchell native, was playing as part of the Mitchell Technical Institute Tuesday Night Doubles League with his girlfriend, Kayonnie Johnson.

Kitto said he had rolled a 300 game once before during a practice game when he was 16 years old, but this was his first during competition.

"I got a little nervous in the 10th frame," Kitto said. "But I just went up there and did what I did for the first nine frames."

SD Rushmores go 4-0 in pool play

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The South Dakota Rushmores beat Bergen (N.J.) 10-9 on Wednesday at the Masters 48-and-older division of the Roy Hobbs World Series of Baseball.

The Rushmores concluded their pool play with a 4-0 record and advanced to the double-elimination AAAA championship, which begins Thursday and runs through Saturday.

Kevin Leighton, of Madison, went 3-for-4 at the plate and recorded the win on the mound for the Rushmores. He threw three shutout innings.
