Fosness earns all-ESD honors

Mitchell's Sam Fosness was named to the all-Eastern South Dakota Conference first team, it was announced recently.

The Kernels' point guard averaged 12.5 points per game to lead the team and started 23 out of 26 games during the season. His three missed games were due to injury or illness.

"He's a good point guard and he's a very good team player," Kernels' coach Gary Munsen said. "He did a good job. He just had too many injuries this year; it was just too bad."

Fosness was the only Mitchell player on the first team, but teammate Tyler Volesky -- also a senior -- was named to the honorable mention list.

Volesky averaged 7.7 points per game which was second only to Fosness. He also averaged 3.3 rebounds per game and hit 56 percent from the field.

Also on the ESD first team was Aberdeen's Jared Hannigan and David Westby. Huron's Terell Newton and Trevor McCaskell and Watertown's Kory Johnson and Kirk Gilbertson also made the list. Brandon Valley's Austin Sumner, Brookings' Ryan McCutcheon and Yankton's Nate Lein also were named first-team all-ESD.

Eastern South Dakota Conference honorable mention list: Andrew Janish, Aberdeen Central; Luke Caar, Chase Reid, Huron; Travis Adney, Scott Chichos, Zach Hanson, Pierre; Ryan Berry, Yankton.
