Mitchell fastpitch drops two to Roosevelt

Luke Hagen/Republic Mitchell pitcher Kristin Miller, left, tosses the ball to first baseman Chelsea Moody during the first game of a doubleheader against Sioux Falls Roosevelt Monday at the Cadwell Park softball complex.

The Mitchell High School girls' fastpitch softball team dropped a pair of games to Sioux Falls Roosevelt Monday at Cadwell Park, losing 4-0 in the first game and 5-3 in the second game.

"That's a good team, and it's easy to see why they're battling for the "A" championship every year," Mitchell coach Jim Misiaszek said of Roosevelt. "They have a heck of a program down there, and to play in front of a big crowd like we did today and show our community how far we've come in such a short time, that was a treat to do that. The girls played really well today."

Kristin Miller took the loss in the first game, allowing six hits and striking out five. She was also 2-for-2 at the plate, and Kelli Schlimgen was 2-for-3.

"Each team had six hits, but they got them when they needed them and we didn't," Misiaszek said. "We had people in scoring position in every inning, but we just couldn't come up with the key hit."

Mitchell led going into the fourth inning of the second game, but eventually settled for the 5-3 loss. Schlimgen took the loss on the mound, while Ashley Misiaszek was 1-for-2 with two RBIs and Schlimgen had the other RBI.

"It was a big confidence boost to be able to hang with them," Misiaszek said. "They just managed to string together some key hits in the last couple innings."

The Mitchell JV Gold team split their games, losing 7-5 and winning 7-6. The Mitchell JV Black team lost 6-5 and 3-2.

Mitchell will be back in action at Brookings on Sunday, and will close the regular season Monday at home with a doubleheader against Sioux Falls O'Gorman beginning at 6 p.m.
