Landowner wants to withdraw 60 acres at game-bird refuge in Brown Co.

PIERRE -- A landowner wants to withdraw about 60 acres of ground from the Renziehausen Slough state game-bird refuge.

The request from Kent Perkins to the state Game, Fish and Parks Commission came through his attorney, Danny Smeins, of Britton.

The refuge in Brown County has existed since 1987, according to Tom Kirschmann, chief of land resources in the state Division of Wildlife.

The refuge covers almost all of two sections of township.

The commission formally proposed a rule change that would designate the Perkins property as outside the refuge.

A public hearing will be held Aug. 1 in Watertown at the commission's next meeting.

"It is farmed right now," Paul Coughlin told commissioners Monday. He oversees land management for the division.
