GF&P Commission rejects elk contingency licenses
SIOUX FALLS – Last year, because summer rainfall was so sparse in so many parts of the Black Hills, and therefore the grazing was too, the South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks Commission showed some pity.
They granted 50 additional licenses for antlerless elk. Some 3,200 people applied.
When the commission visited the issue again Friday, weather conditions had changed. Green grass could still be found.
The mood changed too.
A handful of people wrote to the commission opposing a second round of contingency licenses. No one wrote in favor.
Commissioner Scott Phillips, of New Underwood, said Friday there shouldn’t be any contingency licenses for elk this year.
The vote for none was unanimous.
