05/07/2008 12:00 AM From a fishing point of view, I don’t like the way our spring has progressed. I prefer gradually warming weather. Unstable weather means unstable fishing. Assuming that the weather stabilizes, I’ll still stand by the notion that you want to be out there as the lilacs bloom. This time coincides with fish feeding binges. If you’ll recall last year, even the lilacs were fooled.

04/30/2008 12:00 AM With 40 years as an educator, my whole life has revolved around kids. I care about them, and I care about trends that may be harmful to them. That’s why I’m concerned about a new study that shows people are spending less time outdoors than ever before in the U.S. and other developed nations. Included in the study are hunting, fishing, camping, backpacking, hiking, and trips to national parks and forests.

Where do the toughest game animals come from?
Roger Wiltz
This time of the year, with the walleye spawn in full swing and water temperatures in the mid-40s, catching fish can be difficult. I’ve gradually realized over the years that slowing down, keeping noise to a minimum and using a smaller bait (minnows included), will lead to some, if not more fish when conditions are difficult.
