LETTER: The consequences of election peculiarities
To the Editor:
In our version of democracy, vote totals are rendered meaningless by electoral college, gerrymandering and other peculiarities. For example, Hillary Clinton won nearly three million more votes than Donald Trump. Democrat members of the House of Representatives compiled over a million votes more than the combined totals of Republican members. Wyoming senators get the same number of votes as do California senators.
As a result of these peculiarities, we are horrified to watch these Washington minority legislators and the president work diligently to take health care coverage away from millions of us so that wealthy donors will get enormous tax cuts. This action is justified by numerous lies. Just when we thought health care coverage was safe, they inserted take-away poison into their insane tax-cuts-for-the-rich tax bill.
Rather than representing us, the current cabal in Washington only responds to the dictates of their enormously wealthy donors. Thune-Rounds-Noem and colleagues are working nonstop to get as much as they can as fast as they can. They'll destroy the last vestiges of progressive taxation. They'll take away health care. They'll ensure corporate profits no matter what. They'll do all of this because they can. We're not their priority.
