OUR VIEW: Hisses and cheers

HISSES to the flooding and sloppy conditions hampering landowners in southeastern South Dakota.

Take a trip across Interstate 90 from Sioux Falls to Chamberlain and it's obvious farmers all over are dealing with excess water.

It's a problem we haven't seen much of lately. But due to cooler spring temps, March snowstorms and blasts of rain, fields are flooded all over the place. Aside from that, the Firesteel Creek and James River are both in minor flood stages, which instituted flood warnings around Mitchell.

With the water brings a farmer's least-favorite friend: Mud. And tons of it.

All this spring water slows down planting, makes for messy cattle yards and just makes everyday work harder. Here's to hoping the sun shines and clears up conditions a bit in the near future.

CHEERS to David Kocer, an All-American wrestler who hails from Wagner.

Kocer concluded his collegiate wrestling career for South Dakota State University earlier this month with a seventh-place finish at the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships in Ohio.

Kocer was a member of the impressively successful Wagner High School wrestling teams that won three straight Class B state championships from 2008 to 2010. He's the third member of that high school squad to go on and become a Division I All-American, with the others being Robert Kokesh and Alex Kocer.

What a proud achievement for Kocer, Wagner and all the people of the community.

HISSES to the tragic death of a 5-year-old girl who drowned in the Big Sioux River at Falls Park in Sioux Falls.

Maggie Jo Zaiger, of Audubon, Iowa, slipped into the river last week when she reached out to touch the foam near some waterfalls.

It is the first drowning at the Sioux Falls Park since 2013. Accidental deaths are always heavy on the heart, but it's especially sad when it involves a child.

CHEERS to the Northern State University men's basketball team, which played for a national championship on Saturday.

While we don't claim Northern State as one of the teams we regularly cover, it's exciting to see another South Dakota team have success at a national tournament.

It was tough to see the South Dakota team lose by such a narrow margin, but the Wolves had a fantastic season.

Kudos to the Wolves!
