OUR VIEW: Week in review - the best and worst

HISSES to news that Mitchell was not chosen as one of the Top7 Intelligent Communities of the Year.

The designation, bestowed by the nonprofit organization Intelligent Community Forum, went to cities worldwide, but unfortunately not the Corn Palace City. Certainly, this isn’t all bad news, since Mitchell was named one of the world’s Smart21 Communities by the ICF for the second straight year. The designation is given to cities that have fused technology, culture and collaboration for economic sustainability, according the ICF.

0 Talk about it

That Mitchell has been honored as a finalist for two years really says something about our community.

CHEERS to Mitchell Technical Institute, which was named one of the nation’s top 150 community colleges, making the local school eligible to compete for the 2015 Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence. MTI and Lake Area Technical Institute in Watertown both received the honor, selected from a pool of more than 1,000 public two-year schools.

CHEERS to news that the state reported only nine cases of tuberculosis in 2013, which is the lowest number ever recorded in South Dakota.

Decades ago, TB was a much bigger problem; as recently as 1950, there were 512 cases of the disease in the state. But over the years, aggressive programs have controlled TB and those efforts are apparent today.

CHEERS to the students at Mitchell Middle School who posted sticky notes on lockers last week. The student council was responsible for the program, which was designed to give fellow students a positive start to their day.

Approximately 600 of the notes were posted, many of which urged students to “Have a super day.”

We love this kind of stuff, and we commend the students and faculty members who made this program happen.

HISSES to Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman, whose rant following his team’s win over San Francisco last week became a national issue. Sherman screamed into the television, proclaiming himself the best defensive back in the NFL and calling out a rival. It was an embarrassment, and we wish the interview never happened. What a jerk.
