Multiple agencies report Presho fire chief killed battling fire

Week in review: the best, the worst

HISSES to drought. A report published last week in The Daily Republic noted that the chance of drought this year exists in South Dakota, and South Dakota State University Extension officials are encouraging producers to put drought-related plans in place. Although we have had some moisture in the past month, it's been a dry winter, following a bone-dry autumn. National maps show that South Dakota has some dry areas, and without rain this spring, the problem will worsen. We're keeping our fingers crossed and hoping to avoid such woes this year.

CHEERS to the Mitchell chapter of Pheasants Forever, which recently was honored for having the largest banquet membership of the year. The award is simple enough -- it goes to the chapter that sees the highest number of its members attend the annual banquet, compared to the previous year. The Mitchell honor is the first time a South Dakota chapter has received the award and we think that's perfectly fitting, since we consider Mitchell and the region surrounding it the heart of the nation's pheasant belt.

Speaking of hunting, CHEERS to Davison County's Hunt Safe program, which is gearing up for another season. Hunt Safe classes are offered to kids ages 12 to 15 who wish to hunt within South Dakota borders. The classes are required before resident children can get their license and we think Davison County does an exceptional job of getting these kids trained to correctly handle firearms in the field. This year's classes begin with a March 29-31 session, followed by similar sessions in May, August and September.

CHEERS to the veterans memorial that is planned to be erected in Chamberlain. For the past two decades, many have wished for a memorial along that high-visibility site along Interstate 90, but it took some time for the concept to fall into place. Located near the South Dakota Hall of Fame, the site is perfect for a tribute to South Dakota veterans. It sounds like quite a project, and we are anxious to visit the memorial ourselves.
