Daryld Walters

Daryld Fay Walters passed away quietly in his home in Bethany Meadows, Brandon South Dakota into the loving arms of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at the age of 96.

Funeral services for Daryld will take place on Saturday, February 10, 2018 at 10:30 am at The American Lutheran Church in Presho, SD. Burial will follow at the Presho City Cemetery. Family will be present starting at 9:30 am on Saturday, February 10 to greet guests. The family invites their guests to stay for a luncheon following the funeral service.

Daryld was born on September 19, 1921 to his parents Harvey and Anna Walters at their family home south of Presho, SD. He attended country school at Rose Center Elementary and later graduated from Presho High School. After graduating he served proudly in the United States Air Force and US Navy during WWII. He was stationed in Guam and felt a call to serve his country after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He was honorably discharged in 1946.

On June 22, 1947 he married the love of his life Betty Jean Thornberg in Presho, SD. Betty and Daryld met on a double date with brother Buryl and his sweetheart Dorothy. Shortly after marriage the two were blessed with two children, Fay and Gene. The family then moved to the family homestead south of Presho. On the homestead Daryld and his family raised cattle and wheat. Daryld loved being outdoors and had a special place in his heart for dogs. He surprised Fay at the age of 9 with a pony, the first of many horses to join the homestead. Fay could always be found trailing behind her dad, as his helper and spent much of her time outside. Gene enjoyed driving all the tractors and trucks and assisting dad with fixing mechanical repairs and welding projects.

Daryld had many friends and they fondly referred to him as "Duffy" or "DF". He had a special skill at making people laugh and had a generous and kind heart. Even in his final year at Bethany Meadows the staff would mention on a regular basis how much they loved being with Daryld and his warm and gentle spirit.

Daryld worked until the age of 95. He had a tremendous sense of pride in his work. He'd often say, "the faster I go, the behinder I get." In his free time he was one not to sit around. In fact, you could find him doing carpenter, plumbing, yard work and mechanical work. He was a jack-of-all-trades, a master of none. He was also an avid reader, loved to tinker with things, sports fan and did the crossword almost every day.

Even after retirement Daryld made sure to go back, almost daily, to visit the homestead and help Gene.

Daryld was a lifetime member of The American Lutheran Church and had over 60 years of being a member of the Presho, SD American Legion. He had tremendous love for his Lord and country.

Daryld is survived by his wife of 71 years, Betty Walters, daughter Fay Marie Loftesness (Lee) of Brandon, SD; son D. Gene Walters of Presho, SD, Cali Walters of Yankton, SD, sister Bette Anne Reuman of Rapid City, SD, and a dozen plus grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren as well as a number of nieces and nephews.
