Donna Schmitt

Donna M. Schmitt, age 92, passed away on Wednesday, November 29, 2017 in Sioux Falls, SD at Avera McKennan Hospital with her sons at her side. She had been living at Salem Care & Rehabilitation Center, Salem, SD. Donna Marie Capon was the fourth of nine children born to Alfred (Fred) Theodore Capon and Georgia (Hohf) Capon on August 23, 1925. She was born at her grandparent's farm south of Beresford, SD in Union County which was first homesteaded by her great grandfather who came to Dakota Territory after serving in the Union Army during the Civil War. Donna's grandmother was born in 1875 and Donna's mother was born in 1900 at this same farm. Donna was raised and educated in Salem where her father owned and operated Salem Produce and shipped eggs and chickens by rail to Chicago. Donna's father was also American Legion Commander and City Mayor. Donna graduated from Salem Public High School in 1943. She worked for Vince McCormick at the K & K Store before moving to Chicago during World War II to live with her mother's sisters. Donna was employed at the Douglas Aircraft factory and helped build the C-47 military transport plane until the end of the war. She continued working in Chicago as a bookkeeper at the Mars Candy Co. until her future husband was discharged from the US Army after serving his tour of duty in the South Pacific and Japan where he had been part of the cleanup crew at Nagasaki.

Donna and John (Jack) Peter Schmitt were married at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Salem in 1946. She helped Jack operate Schmitt's DX Service and Schmitt's Sporting Goods in Salem and which was open from 7:00 A.M. to midnight, 365 days a year, selling gas, oil, groceries, beer, guns, hunting & fishing equipment, boats, motors and many other items. They also operated a small auto salvage yard at the same location. Jack died from cancer in 1962 at the age of 35. Donna continued to run the business and later sold it to Martin Feterl. Donna went to work as a bookkeeper for Bob Sabers at Sabers Oil Co. She became City Finance Officer in 1974 and after 28 years, retired in 2002 at age 76. Donna was active in women's league bowling in her youth and was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, St. Mary's Catholic Church Altar Society and Women's Catholic Order of Foresters. She was a quiet, reserved and caring person who most enjoyed working, watching NFL football and being with family and friends.

Donna was preceded in death by her parents, husband, infant son Ronald Schmitt at birth; brothers, Bob Capon, Doug Capon and Jerry Capon; sisters,

Laverna Mae Capon at birth, Phyllis Nadine Capon at birth, Shirley Sims and Bonnie Richardson.

Donna is survived by her sons, Rick (Lavon) Schmitt, Valley Springs, SD and John (Leesa) Schmitt, Omaha, NB; grandchildren, Helen Schmitt, Brandon, SD, Lonna Schmitt, Austin, TX, Renae Schmitt, Mobridge, SD, Nicholas (Vivi), Schmitt, Omaha, NB, Amy (Tony) Ortiz, Pleasant Grove, UT, and Neal (Stephanie) Schmitt, Omaha, NB; great grandchildren, Skyler (Bryan) Ellefson, West Point, NB, Logan Schmitt, Omaha, NB and Nicholas Jacob Schmitt II, Omaha, NB; sister, Kay Krieger, Hemet, CA; sisters in law, Rosemary McGregor, North Salt Lake City, UT and Helen Mullin, Citrus Heights, CA and many nieces and nephews.

A Rosary service will be at 3:00 P.M. and a wake service will be at 7:00 P.M. on Tuesday, December 5, 2017 at Kinzley Funeral Home in Salem. Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. Mary's Catholic Church at 10:30 A.M on Wednesday, December 6, 2017 followed by burial services at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery and a meal at St. Mary's Hall.
