Dr. Lonnie Lee Waltner

Dr. Lonnie Lee Waltner of Bridgewater SD passed away peacefully at Oakview Terrace in Freeman SD on September 11, 2017.

Lonnie was born June 6, 1940 to Ralph and Verda (Kaufman) Waltner of rural Hurley SD. A 1958 graduate of Freeman Academy, he took his pre-med at the University of South Dakota, followed by a two-year program at USD Medical School. After earning his M.D. from the University of Nebraska-Omaha and residency at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, Lonnie served in Jackson MS as an officer with the Public Health Service, from which he was honorably discharged. In 1968 he joined Rural Medical Clinics in Freeman and Bridgewater, with whom he served as a family practitioner until his retirement in 2006.

Following his retirement, Lonnie remained an active contributor in both the Bridgewater and Freeman communities and was faithfully involved in the lives of his wife, children and grandchildren as well as his church and numerous professional and alumni organizations.

Welcoming Lonnie into heaven are his wife, Mary (Ratzlaff); his parents; and two of his children, daughter Melissa and son Lee. Continuing to celebrate his life on earth are his daughter, Lynell Weeg and husband Forrest; son Jay and wife Colleen; eight grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.

Visitation with viewing will be 5:00-7:00 p.m. Thursday, September 14 at Trinity Community Church in Bridgewater. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday, September 15 at Salem Mennonite Church, southeast of Freeman.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Gideons International.
