Leo Joseph Effling, age 52, of Artesian, SD died Saturday, March 18, 2017 at his home of an apparent heart attack. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 AM Wednesday, March 22, 2017 at St. Charles Catholic Church in Artesian with burial at Brisbine Cemetery, Rural Artesian, SD. Visitation will be from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Tuesday at the Will Funeral Chapel with a prayer service followed by a rosary beginning at 7:00 PM. Arrangements are under the direction of the Will Funeral Chapel.
Leo Joseph Effling, son of Vincent and Esther (Uttecht) Effling, was born November 25, 1964 in Mitchell, SD. He grew up on the family farm in rural Artesian, SD. Leo attended school in Artesian and graduated from Artesian High School in 1983. After high school, Leo received an ag program degree from Mitchell Vo-Tech.
Leo was united in marriage with Wanda Swanson on August 17, 1985 in Chamberlain, SD. The couple made their home on the Cote Farm in rural Artesian. In 1992 the couple moved to the family farm where he continued to farm until his death. He was also a Legend Corn Dealer.
He enjoyed toy trains, comic books, playing poker, hunting and fishing with his boys. Leo loved sports and attending his boy's sporting events.
Leo was a member of St. Charles Catholic Church in Artesian and also a past member of the Artesian School Board.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Wanda Effling, Artesian, SD; four sons, Taylor Effling, Woonsockset, SD, Nathan (Tatem) Effling, Sioux Falls, SD, Zachary Effling, Cedar Falls, IA, Logan Effling, Artesian, SD; his parents, Vincent and Esther Effling, Artesian, SD; five sisters, Lisa (Norman) Neugebauer, Mitchell, SD, Bonita (Michael) Feilmeier, Jefferson, SD, Rita (Jeff) Miller, Mitchell, SD, Lori (Lance) Ischen, Brookings, SD, Pamela (Adam) Zdrilic, Brandon, SD; his in-laws, Alvin and Gwedelynn Swanson, Pukwana, SD, two sisters-in-law, Marjean (Carl) Rainey, St. George, UT, Angela (Jason) Kulm, Mitchell, SD; a brother-in-law, Troy (Monica) Swanson, Pukwana, SD; several aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Joe and Ellen Effling and August and Pauline Uttecht; several aunts and uncles.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
