OUR VIEW: Hisses and cheers

CHEERS to the news that the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball National Championships will remain in Sioux Falls at the Sanford Pentagon through 2020.

The NAIA announced last week the event will be hosted by the Sioux Falls Sports Authority, Dakota State University and Northwestern College. While we're still disappointed Mitchell didn't land this tournament last year, Sioux Falls is the next-best option.

Only an hour's drive from Mitchell, Sioux Falls put together a good tournament last year. And, considering the success of the Dakota Wesleyan University men's basketball team, we think Mitchell residents will have a good chance to make the trip each of the next two years.

HISSES to recent crime and car crashes in the area.

On Friday, Mitchell law enforcement arrested a person who was hiding in a corn field after he allegedly shoplifted from a business and stole a side-by-side UTV. First responders were also on scene Friday when a vehicle crashed near Riverside Road east of Mitchell.

There were other crashes last week, and a significantly high number of police calls.

Perhaps it's just a busy time of year, but we don't like seeing extra work for local law enforcement or first responders. We always appreciate the work they do to keep Mitchell safe and a great place to live.

CHEERS to the great turnout at the South Dakota Chislic Festival over the weekend in Freeman.

More than 7,000 people attended the event. Yes, that's right — thousands of people on Saturday checked out the first-ever chislic festival in Freeman. What an amazing turnout.

Event organizers are already planning improvements for next year's festival.

We love seeing one of our local communities hosting this — Freeman does a wonderful job in ensuring it is a relevant town. Not only does it host the chislic festival, but it also has its annual Schmeckfest.

We applaud all the attendees of the chislic festival over the weekend, and we also give major kudos to the organizers and participants who made a great event.

CHEERS to all the teams wrapping up successful summers of baseball.

The 32-team state amateur baseball tournament is set, the Mitchell Legion baseball team just qualified for the state tournament, and dozens of teener teams are prepping for year-end tournaments. And, of course, the state Junior Legion baseball tournament is on its way to Mitchell this week.

While this all signifies the end of summer, we love seeing a great baseball game — especially playoff baseball. Good luck to all the teams as the year wraps up.
