James Schneider, 75, Mitchell, died Friday, August 16, 2013, Avera Queen of Peace Hospital. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 21, 2013 at 10:30 AM at Holy Family Catholic Church, Mitchell. Burial will be in Servicemen’s Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 6-8:00 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at Holy Family Catholic Church. Arrangements are under the direction of the Bittner Funeral Chapel.

James C. Schneider was born on the farm in Alexandria, SD, August 30, 1937 to Cornelius J. and Marguerite (Kinney) Schneider. Jim grew up in Alex with his two brothers, Jack and Jerry and graduated from Alexandria High School in 1955. He enlisted and served in the U.S. Navy before returning to Alexandria. He married Joyce E. Eichten in Ethan February 5th, 1959. They farmed during their early married years and later moved to Mitchell where he worked for J.F. Anderson Lumber Company.

In 1965 the family moved to Huron where Jim managed J. F. Anderson Lumber. In 1967 they returned to Mitchell where they raised their family. Jim worked and then managed the construction division at United Building Center (now Pro-Build) for 41 years, until his retirement in 2001. Jim, a meticulous carpenter and handyman, especially enjoyed working at the city golf course. He also worked as security at Dakota Fest, the State Fair, and the Sheriff’s Department. He loved athletics and kept active volunteering, attending, and enjoying local sporting events. He volunteered his time for the city RSVP program and the Corn Palace Relays for many years, during which time he was named Honorary Referee. He also enjoyed his work on the grounds crew during the State Amateur Baseball Tournament. When he wasn’t working at the city golf course, he enjoyed golfing and spending time with his family and many friends. Jim was quick to lend a helping hand to anyone in need and could be counted on for completing just about any task presented.

Jim was an active member of Holy Family Catholic Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus for over 50 years. He is survived by his wife, Joyce and his children: Kathleen (Steve)Willis and Debra (Bob) Everson of Mitchell, Jane Murphy of Alexandria, MN, and David (Sheila) Schneider of Brookings; grandchildren: Michael, Ryan (Lyndsie), Jimmy, Olivia, and Hannah Willis, Andrew, Matthew (Angela), and Adam Everson, Nicole(Matt)Raske, Mary, and Danny Murphy, Abby (Shawn) Hawks, and Tyler (Sara) Schneider; and great-grandchildren: Evan and Isaac Raske, Addysen and Emersyn Willis, and Parker Citrowski, his brothers: Jack (Bernie) of Minneapolis and Jerry (Mary) of Sioux Falls, and numerous in-laws, nieces and nephews.
