Study: SD's baby boomers give way to Millenials

Sorry, Baby Boomers, you're no longer the "pig in the python." You've been replaced by the Millennials as the largest demographic in South Dakota, according to Governing magazine.

The publication recently looked at the parentage of Millennials (ages 11 to 30), Generation "X" (31 to 46), Baby Boomers (47-65) and Silent Generation (66-84) across the nation.

In South Dakota, Millennials make up 27.3 percent of the population, while the formerly transcendent Baby Boomers are the second-largest group at 25 percent.

Gen Xers are the third-largest group at 18.6 percent and the Silent Generation is last at 11.2 percent.

In the region, North Dakota is the fourth-youngest state in the nation, with 29.6 percent of its population falling into the Millennial category. Montana ranked fifth in percentage in Baby Boomers at 27.5 percent of its population. The Big Sky state also ranked fourth for percentage of Silent Generation at 12.3 percent of its population.
