Two juveniles escape wrecked vehicle before fire

WOONSOCKET -- Two juveniles were able to escape from a wrecked vehicle before it became engulfed in flames after a crash shortly after 4 p.m. Wednesday on a gravel road southwest of Woonsocket.

According to South Dakota Highway Patrol Trooper Andrew Miller, the two juveniles were heading south on 389th Avenue, when the juvenile driving lost control of the vehicle, which caused it to travel into the ditch and roll onto its roof.

Miller said the driver was able to crawl out the rear window of the vehicle, and then helped the passenger out the side of the vehicle.

Once the the two juveniles were out the vehicle, it started on fire and eventually became engulfed in flames. The Wessington Springs Fire Department put out the fire, but not before the vehicle was totally destroyed, Miller said.

Both juveniles suffered minor injuries in the crash, and the passenger was transported by ambulance to Avera Queen of Peace Hospital in Mitchell.

The driver was cited for careless driving, Miller said, and speed was a factor in the crash. Names of the people involved were not released because they are juveniles.
