Mitchell gets cold, but no record
Mitchell's low of 31 degrees Friday didn't break any records, but two nearby cities endured temperatures colder than anywhere else in the continental U.S.
Mitchell's low was 6 degrees shy of the city's record low for May 16, which was set at 25 degrees in 1929, according to Brad Adams, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls.
The low Friday in Aberdeen and Sioux Falls was 23 degrees. That's colder than anywhere else in the continental U.S. and a record low for May 16 in both cities, Adams said.
In Sioux Falls, the old record was set at 32 degrees in 1929, and in Aberdeen, it was set at 29 degrees in both 1929 and 1925.
