Blaze breaks out at Howard grain elevator

HOWARD — Miner County offi cials confirmed a large fire at the Howard Farmers Co-op grain elevator Thursday night.

Miner County’s 911 Manager Cora Schwader said what she described as a “major fire” was reported around 9:15 p.m. Thursday at the elevator. Miner County Emergency Manager Bob Calmus, who lives out of town, said he could see the flames from six miles away when he was first called to the scene.

“By the time I got here, it was really engulfed in flames,” he said.

Another business, Howard Cold Storage and Lockers, was destroyed by fire in November. Calmus did not yet know how extensive the damages from Thursday night’s fi re were.

By about 10:30 p.m., Calmus said the flames had lessened, but firefighters were still working to extinguish the blaze. He did not believe anyone was in the building when it started on fire. He said the Canova, Fedora and Howard fire departments were all on scene.
