Child becomes second to die after Gregory County crash
A one-and-a-half-year-old child has become the second fatality resulting from a two-vehicle crash Feb. 24 three miles west of Burke, the state Department of Public Safety said Friday.
The child, Adryan Jones, died late Wednesday in a Sioux Falls hospital from injuries suffered in the crash. The child was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, not a child restraint seat as the South Dakota Highway Patrol had originally reported.
The child's mother, Sarah Mozley, 21, of Gregory, died March 2. Mozley was the passenger in a 1988 F-150 pickup that was being driven eastbound on U.S. Highway 18 by Tommy Ray Jones, 20, of Gregory. The vehicle lost control, began to swerve and entered the westbound lane, where a 2008 Lexus RX350 being driven by Jean Margaret Massa, 62, of Carter, collided with the passenger side door of the pickup. Neither Jones nor Mozley was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash and the child was seated in the middle bench seat of the pickup at the time of the crash.
According to The Burke Gazette, Jones suffered a small fracture on his pelvic bone and an injury to a vertebrae and suffered cardiac arrest at the time of the accident. That did not cause heart damage but did disrupt the flow of oxygen to his brain, causing some brain damage. The newspaper reported that the child had been making progress and was responsive to numerous senses.
Massa and her passenger, Matthew Anton Jensen, 18, of Winner, suffered minor injuries in the crash. Both were wearing seat belts. The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating.
