Storm prompts school year extension in Rapid City

RAPID CITY (AP) — The Rapid City School Board has approved adding three days to the school year to make up for time students missed in the wake of an Oct. 4 blizzard.

The Rapid City Journal reports ( that the extension means the academic year for Rapid City students will stretch beyond Memorial Day, to Wednesday, May 28. Teachers will work one more day after that.

The storm dumped nearly 2 feet of snow in the city, damaging schools and leading to impassable bus routes and power outages.
