Salem firefighter identified as victim of fatal I-90 crash

Man dies Saturday in crash near Wagner

WAGNER — A Flandreau man died in a single-vehicle crash early Saturday morning south of Wagner.

James Russell Weddell, 57, was driving southbound on 395th Avenue in a 1998 Ford Expedition at about 12:30 a.m. Saturday, according to a news release from the South Dakota Department of Public Safety. When the roadway changed from pavement to gravel, Weddell’s vehicle drove into the east ditch, and then swerved across the roadway and into the ditch, where it rolled.

Weddell, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene.

No additional information was immediately available.

The Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. The Charles Mix County Sheriff’s Office, Wagner Police Department and Wagner Fire Department also responded to the crash.
