SD society takes part in civil rights project

PIERRE (AP) — The South Dakota State Historical Society's museum in Pierre will take part in a national project designed to encourage discussion of America's civil rights movement.

The museum at the society's Cultural Heritage Center is one of 473 institutions across the country to be awarded a set of four documentary films chronicling the history of the civil rights movement. The films and other material will be used for the project, which begins in February 2015.

Museum director Jay Smith says officials are just beginning to plan for project. He says the museum will work with the South Dakota Humanities Council and schools to provide a range of activities.

The project is called "Created Equal: America's Civil Rights Struggle."
