First day of Crazy Horse hike draws 4,400 people

CRAZY HORSE MEMORIAL (AP) -- More than 4,000 people hiked to the top of the Crazy Horse Memorial on the first day of this year's annual Volksmarch at the huge mountain carving in the Black Hills.

This is the 28th year for the 6.2-mile round trip hike at the mountain where a sculpture of Lakota leader Crazy Horse is being carved.

The memorial reports that 4,437 hikers took part in Saturday's hike, down from nearly 5,800 who registered for the first day a year ago. The second day of hiking was being held Sunday.

The cost to participate is $3 and registration is not necessary.
