Buyer of $102,000 big-horn sheep license remains mystery

WINNER -- The buyer of a South Dakota bighorn sheep license remains a mystery after the Thursday meeting of the state Game, Fish and Parks Commission.

GF&P biologist Tom Kirschenmann told commissioners that the Midwest chapter of the Wild Sheep Foundation sold the bighorn license for $102,000.

The regulations gave the foundation 14 days to submit the paperwork and money. The auction took place March 23. Kirschenmann said the packet is in the mail and he expects it to arrive soon.

He didn't say who bought it.

"Allegedly it was a South Dakota resident, because we don't know," GF&P Secretary Jeff Vonk said.

Funds from the sale will be dedicated to GF&P's sheep program. The auction was the first for South Dakota for a bighorn license. Two other bighorn licenses will be available to hunters in a random drawing.
