USD establishes funds to memorialize late Gov. Janklow
VERMILLION (AP) -- The University of South Dakota Foundation has established two memorial funds in the name of former South Dakota Gov. Bill Janklow.
The Janklow Archival Fund will support the processing of Janklow's public and personal papers, and the Janklow Scholarship Fund will support the studies of students dedicated to public service in South Dakota.
Janklow died on Jan. 12, 2012, at the age of 72.
Lindsey Janklow, the former governor's granddaughter and a USD sophomore, says a scholarship is a fitting way to remember her grandfather. The initial scholarship recipient will be selected for the 2012 fall semester.
Janklow served as South Dakota's attorney general from 1975 to 1979. He was the state's longest serving governor from 1979 to 1987, and 1995 to 2003. He was elected to Congress in 2002.
