Pine Ridge woman gets grant to teach healthy cooking

PINE RIDGE INDIAN RESERVATION (AP) -- A South Dakota woman who lives on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation has received a $10,000 fellowship to teach healthy cooking to local school children.

Shannon Freed received the grant from the National Audubon Society and Toyota.

Freed plans to create a food garden this spring and teach students at a reservation school how to plant, harvest and cook local plants. She is looking for a local school partner.

Freed moved to the reservation with her husband in 2009 from California. She says one of the first things she missed was the availability of fresh fruits and vegetables at the reservation's grocery stores.
