Thanks to a $20,000 grant, Dakota Wesleyan University's campus will be a little bit safer.

The university announced Thursday it was awarded a $20,000 grant from the Campus Consortium — a global education association of schools, colleges and universities.

The grant will provide DWU with the BlueLight Emergency Mobile App, and DWU Provost Joe Roidt said it will help with the safety of students and faculty.

"With the near universal adoption of smartphones, it's ideal that this sort of safety feature be available on these devices so that, with the tap of a button, students can alert police, medical services, friends and family of an emergency," Roidt said in a press release.

The app allows students to contact campus safety, automatically providing the caller's location. Users can also customize the app to send alerts to parents, guardians or friends in case of emergency.
