A Mitchell woman was named the state's social worker of the year.

Shawna Huls was presented the award during the 2017 South Dakota Association of Healthcare Organizations convention in Rapid City and has been a social worker at Avera Queen of Peace for six years.

The award recognizes a social worker in the hospital setting who is an advocate for patients and families, according to a press release from Avera.

"Shawna demonstrates each day her dedication to not only her profession but to each and every patient and family member she encounters," said Melonnie Gregerson, director of Case Management, Social Services and Chaplaincy at Avera Queen of Peace. "She strives to provide the best care and service to people during what could be the most vulnerable time in their life. She shows compassion and respect through her body language and the words that she speaks."
