KIMBALL -- No one was injured on Saturday in a 14-car train derailment near Kimball.

According to the Brule County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page, 14 cars hauling grain from Kennebec to Mitchell derailed and damaged the track.

UPDATE: Official on derailment: Track failure 'a matter of time'

The train was not hauling anything hazardous and no injuries were reported in the derailment six miles east of Kimball.

According to the post, Dakota Southern Railway is in the process of arranging cleanup operations.

No other information was immediately available from the Brule County Sheriff’s Office, Kimball Fire Department or Dakota Southern Railway. Although Dakota Southern Railway confirmed an incident occurred, affirming that no one was hurt and no material spilled was hazardous.

South central South Dakota has seen other derailments in the region over the last two years. In 2015, a derailment near Scotland caused $1.08 million in damage after ethanol leaked onto a field and sparked a fire. In 2016, two cars derailed in Mitchell after the axles slid off the rails.
