Rain, wind hits Mitchell in early-morning storm

An early-morning storm moved through the area early Friday and dropped 39 hundredths of an inch of rain in Mitchell.

Rain began to fall around 1 a.m. Friday and concluded around 2:30 a.m., according to Mike Gillispie, hydrologist for the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls. Winds peaked at 37 mph during the storm.

More rain is predicted this weekend. Up to three-quarters of an inch of rain could fall by the end of the weekend, Gillispie said.

Temperatures are expected to drop next week.

"The one thing we're watching is some very much below-normal temperatures filtering into the region early next week on Monday and Tuesday," Gillispie said. "We are looking at temperatures that are going to be 15 to 20 degrees below normal."

A cold front is forecasted to sweep through the Northern Plains over to the Great Lakes area. Mitchell's high temperature Monday is 69, with Tuesday at 73. Lows each night will dip to the lower 40s.
