Mitchell's Q1 sales tax down slightly from 2013

Mitchell logged record sales tax collections in 2012.

The city of Mitchell's 2 percent sales tax generated $1,132,139.50 during the first quarter of 2014, according to a report presented Monday during a 7:20 p.m. Finance Committee meeting, which took place prior to Monday night's city council meeting.

That's slightly less than the $1,136,426.56 generated by the city's sales tax during the first quarter of 2013.

Councilman Dan Allen said he wasn't overly disappointed by the slight decline, given how cold the weather was during the first quarter of 2014.

"Hopefully it warms up now and people will go outside and buy something," Allen said.

The city collected approximately $10.4 million from its 2 percent sales tax in all of 2013. That was nearly a 3 percent drop from 2012, when the city's sales tax generated nearly $10.74 million, a record amount and a 9.2 percent increase from 2011.

Collections of the city's entertainment tax -- an extra 1 percent tax on lodging, alcoholic beverages and prepared food -- generated $135,546.54 during the first quarter of 2014. That's a 2.7 percent increase from the first quarter of 2013, when $131,955.75 was collected.

The tax collected $691,101.94 in all of 2013 and $697,676.11 in 2012.
