About 90 historic cars took advantage of the nice weather Friday evening for the inaugural Mustangs on Main event in Mitchell.

The event was put on by Vern Eide of Mitchell at their Ford location on North Main Street and benefitted Make-A-Wish of South Dakota. The event raised about $600 for the organization to assist children with life-threatening medical conditions in the region.

"It was awesome. We had a great night for it and it went really well." said Tyler Laffey, who is Vern Eide's finance manager and organized the event. He said a majority of the cars on display were Ford Mustangs.

The event included a show and shine, where vehicles were displayed and a poker run later, with seven businesses participating throughout Mitchell and each location giving out cards to make out the participants' hand. The event also allowed participants to buy additional hands to benefit the charity.

Laffey said the event was held in conjunction with Ford's 50th anniversary of the Mustang, and that's where the idea for the poker run was hatched. He said Make-A-Wish was a perfect recipient for the cause.

"They do so many great things for kids and we were just glad to help out," he said.

Laffey said entrants from Pierre and Brookings participated, along with a car owner from North Dakota. He said organizers are already looking forward to doing it again next year.

"The North Dakota entry was really cool and I think it had a bigger reach than we even first thought," he said. "Everyone had a great time and hopefully we can have a bigger event next year."
