Morgan named Don Boyden Service Above Self winner

The Rotary Club of Mitchell honored 28 high school seniors Wednesday at the 27th annual Rotary Scholars Recognition Banquet.

The students represent the top 15 percent of Mitchell Christian High School and Mitchell High School based on grade point averages throughout their high school career.

Rotary Scholars were asked to submit a service resume and write an essay based on the Rotary motto, "Service Above Self."

The Mitchell Rotary Club presented $400 scholarships to 27 of the students. One student, whose high school career and essay best exemplifies that motto, received the Don Boyden Service Above Self Award, a $1,500 scholarship. That student was Joe Morgan, of Mitchell High School.

In addition to recognizing student achievement, the Mitchell Rotary Club awarded the Carl Sprunger Outstanding Educator Award, a $250 grant, to Mitchell High School educator Terry Aslesen for his contribution to the scholastic and leadership success of the Rotary Scholars.

This grant is made in the memory of long-time Rotarian Carl Sprunger, who demonstrated a commitment to the development of young people throughout his lifetime.

The Carl Sprunger Educator of the Year Award is made possible through contributions of Tom and Charlys Dice, and is chosen by nominations submitted by students who have qualified as Rotary Scholars.
