Multiple agencies report Presho fire chief killed battling fire

Lodge remodel nearly complete at Camp Arroya

A remodel of the main lodge at Camp Arroya is nearly complete a few months after the 12-acre lakeside camp returned to the city's control.

Camp Arroya, tucked away on the northern shore of Lake Mitchell, is owned by the city of Mitchell, but was managed by a nonprofit group until city officials -- many of whom felt the camp was being underutilized -- decided last summer not to renew the city's 25-year, dollar-a-year lease with the group. The lease expired at the end of December and the camp is now in the control of Mitchell's Parks and Recreation Department.

Dusty Rodiek, the city's parks and recreation director, said a remodel of the camp's main lodge will be finished in the next few weeks, before the first campers arrive in May. Changes to the lodge include the removal of a wall to open up additional meeting space, as well as work done in the kitchen, Rodiek said.

The remodel, which began about a month ago, was done for a minimal cost because many of the materials that were removed, such as wood paneling, are being reused. Rodiek did not give an amount on the costs of the project.

In addition to the main lodge, the camp includes a picnic shelter, children's play areas, an open grassy area near the shore and nature trails.

Rodiek said the Parks and Recreation Department is looking into how much it will cost to bring the city's sewer and water to the camp, but those plans are still in the works.
