Mitchell man charged with wife’s suffocation death

Mitchell police and firefighters respond to a two-vehicle accident Monday afternoon at the intersection of East Sixth Avenue and North Mentzer Street in Mitchell. Kimberly VanWalleghen, 61, of Letcher, was driving her 2005 Chevrolet Silverado north on North Mentzer Street as James Upton, 46, of Mitchell, was driving his 1990 Chevy pickup east on East Sixth Avenue when the two vehicles collided in the intersection. Upton was transported to Avera Queen of Peace Hospital in Mitchell for a minor head injury. The investigation is ongoing and no citations have been issued, according to Mitchell Police Division Officer Jackson Brown. No alcohol or drugs were involved in the accident and VanWalleghen was wearing her seat belt, according to Brown. Brown said Upton’s seat belt status was unknown as of Monday night.
