"Having lived and worked in South Dakota for nearly all of my adult life, I recognize the treasure we have here," Stevens said in a news release. "I would like to give back to the state that has given me so much."

"I am not a career politician, and I have no single-issue agenda to carry forward," he added. "I would, instead, listen to the concerns of the people of District 20 and weigh these concerns in legislative decisions that affect our future. We want to maintain the sound business climate and quality of life we've worked so hard to achieve. I would work tirelessly to make sure that our resources are invested wisely."

A graduate of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Stevens earned his bachelor's degree in political science and history. His career has included 32 years in the South Dakota financial services industry. He was a teacher of history and government immediately following his university graduation. Currently, Stevens is part-time executive director of the Mitchell Area United Way. He has also served as a high school and college sports official for many years.

Stevens is a long-term member of Rotary International, having served as president of the Mitchell Rotary club. He has served on the Howard Wood Dakota Relays Board for many years and is a past president of the board. He is a past board member of the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, Alumni Association.

Stevens has two adult married sons and three grandchildren.

District 20's two House seats are currently held by Tona Rozum and Lance Carson, who are both Republicans from Mitchell. Rozum has said she plans to seek re-election, but Carson is term-limited and cannot seek re-election to the House this year. The top two vote-getters in the November general election win the two seats.

Joshua Klumb, a Republican from Mount Vernon, also plans to run for a House seat in District 20.
