A 58-year-old man’s body was found Thursday morning in a parking lot near the Corn Palace in Mitchell, according to police.

Chief of Public Safety Lyndon Overweg said a passerby called dispatch around 8 a.m. to report a man was lying face-down in a parking lot directly east of the Corn Palace.

There were no obvious signs of foul play, said Detective Lt. Don Everson with the Mitchell Police Division.

No cause of the death was determined Thursday.

Everson said they believe the victim is a Mitchell resident, but they are withholding the man’s name until all family members can be notified.

Coroner George Bittner picked up the man’s body Thursday morning and an autopsy was conducted Thursday afternoon, Everson said.

He said the division will release information today regarding the man’s identity and the cause of death.

The scene was still taped off with crime scene tape Thursday afternoon.

“We’re not sure what happened,” Overweg said.

“We’re taking all precautions right now. We’re keeping the scene secured with personnel on it.”
