Good kids and a great show.

That’s what Mitchell High School vocal director Chris Miller described as the winning combination -- literally -- for Friend de Coup at this weekend’s competition. Miller said the show choir won the Grand Champion and Best Choreography awards in the open class division Saturday at the Urbandale Show Choir Invitational in Urbandale, Iowa.

“I think it’s a combination of a show with an amazing message that hits home for lots of people and incredible students with great character,” he said. “It’s very exciting. It was a good win for the kids.”

It’s the first time Friend de Coup has competed at the Urbandale Invitational, which Miller said  had seven schools in the open class category; only six were able to advance to the finals. When MHS entered the finals in second place, Miller said the group had to rally and “change some judges’ minds.”

“We must have done our job, because there were seven judges on the panel and six out of seven of those judges gave us a first-place rating,” he said. “It was decisive.”

It was the second competition of the season for MHS -- and its second victory, after winning Grand Champion at the Westside Competition of Excellence in Omaha, Neb.

“So we’re kind of on a roll,” Miller said. “It seems that every year we compete we try to get better, but everyone else gets better, too.”

He said this year’s competition set, “Save the World,” shares a simple message: “We all need saving, and we all need to help each other.” It’s a message that seems to resonate with people, and one that the show choir students deliver authentically.

“They’re just so incredibly believable,” Miller said. “Every performance is heartfelt.”
