Mitchell man rolls vehicle, is injured in high-speed chase

Charges are pending against a Mitchell man who rolled his vehicle during a high-speed chase with law enforcement early Saturday morning in town.

Davison County Chief Deputy Steve Harr said Trevor Kohlrus, 21, was driving a Pontiac Grand Prix on Havens Avenue when a deputy clocked him exceeding the speed limit around 2:30 a.m. Saturday. According to Harr, Kohlrus fled when the deputy tried to stop him, which led to a short pursuit in town that reached at least 60 mph.

The vehicle pursuit ended, Harr said, when Kohlrus lost control of his vehicle and it rolled at least once, hitting a snowbank, a utility pole, a parked pickup, a parked car, a fence and a tree before coming to rest on its rooftop in the 500 block of West Elm.

Harr said Kohlrus then took off on foot, and was pursued and apprehended by officers with the Mitchell Police Division. Kohlrus was then transported by ambulance to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Harr said he has since been released.

Kohlrus’ vehicle was totaled in the accident, and Harr said charges are pending. The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating.
